Teach Your Child to Read at Home in Fort Myers

"The best teachers are those who pass on their zeal and enthusiasm as a legacy to their students." ~ Robert John Meehan

Learning Letters & Sounds in Fort Myers

Each child should be able to recite the alphabet very early and parents should frequently practice and review it with their child. I think that after learning letter names, the child can learn the letter's sound. Symbols or letters are used in our language, and it is beyond belief that a child could learn to effectively read without knowing the symbols used and listening for the sound each letter makes when used in words while talking and in printed words when writing.

Studying Consonants & Vowels

Our alphabet is made up of five vowels and twenty-one consonants and there are infinite numbers of letter combinations which make up our words. In phonics sequential concepts in the combining of consonants with vowels is practiced to create words for reading. By knowing sounds, patterns and word syllables, children can learn to sound out unfamiliar words increasing their fluency with new vocabulary and becoming more efficient readers.

Get Ready to Read in Fort Myers

You should be aware of a few signs that your child displays before beginning reading lessons. Having a curiosity about books and pictures, plus a positive attitude about learning new things are flags you might notice about your child when considering teaching her/him to read. Hopefully, your child would show an interest and eagerness about learning to read. Materials and techniques can be tried and adjusted as long as your little one is enjoying reading time with Mom or Dad.

Ways to Teach Reading

Four primary methods of teaching reading are employed in most areas. Even though some methods require lots of visual memory, when reading is taught phonetically a child can apply techniques learned to decode difficult words. Whether it's learning to read by memory, interest, experience, or phonetically, each child learns to read in their own way, so the teacher must know all types of teaching reading.. But when parts of each method are applied to teaching reading, the class of children will benefit from the exposure to the varied teaching types.

Consonant and Vowels

The vowels are “a, e, i, o, u and sometimes y” and the other letters are consonants. Vowels have long and short sounds. Most often consonants have one sound. An exception is “c” and “j” which have a “hard” or “soft” sound. Blends, digraphs and diphthongs are advanced lessons. Consonants that don't look alike are taught first so early learners don't get confused. e.g. “s” and “m” and “t”. During each session,1, 2 or 3 consonants might be taught depending on the child's memory. With your child, make a list of words starting with one consonant and draw a picture for the word if you can. Provide phonics worksheets and phonics activities for each consonant.

Once you”ve taught about 3-4 consonant sounds, the short “a” is next so that your child will soon be able to read simple words like “pan” or “man”. Vowel Rule #1: When there is one vowel between two consonants the short vowel sound is usually heard. For extra practice, there are lots of phonics activities and phonics games online. Short vowel sounds can be a little tricky to hear for young children. After seeing them in little words it seems to be easier.

Long vowel sounds are not as hard as short vowels due to the fact that their sound is the same as their name. Learning to read long vowel words is a bit easier such as “name” and “soap” because they follow the long vowel rule. Sometimes in a word there are two vowels separated by a consonant and the end is a silent “e”. This still makes the first vowel long. Word recognition is better and reading comprehension is improved when a child uses the phonetic sounds when reading. He or she become more efficient readers.

Ways to Teach Reading in Fort Myers FL

Essentially, four ways to learn reading are by Language Experience, Contextual Reading, Whole Word Approach and Phonics. Years of research has proven that the best of the reading strategies is teaching children to read by the Phonics method and they become the most successful readers. Once the names and sounds of the alphabet are known, a child now has phonetic tools to help him/her when learning new words. Phonetic skills and sounding out letters in words will be carried over to improve a child's reading comprehension, spelling and writing in Fort Myers.

During language lessons, phonics must be taught in an precise order, so no skills are overlooked. Many chances to practice with worksheets and games is absolutely advisable. Should any part of a lesson be hastily taught, omitted or skimmed through, it's almost impossible to reteach the skill at a later time, so practice while the skill is fresh. It's like building a house on a wobbly foundation that can never be corrected properly.

Research has proven that teaching phonics to children is the most successful way to teach kids to read. The phonics method teaches children that each letter has a sound and a name. When using the phonetic method, a child is able to use consonant and vowels to decode new words. Improvement is spelling and writing is a result of knowing how vowels and consonants create new words.

Learning Letters and Sounds of the Alphabet in Fort Myers

One of the first songs a child usually learns is the Alphabet Song. It's a good idea to put up an alphabet chart for the child to connect the name of the letter with its symbol. It's important to point to each letter while singing so the child can match the auditory and the visual aspects of learning alphabet phonics.

Both the phonics sounds and the alphabet names must be thoroughly reviewed and practiced with phonics games so a child knows them very well. When a firm and solid foundation is set, the next phonics lessons and worksheets would be merging consonants and vowels to form words the child would know and be able to read.

Primary grade children are introduced to lower case letters first and print these letters with sticks and balls. The “r”, “n”, “h”, and “m” are made with humps. Shortly after, upper case letters are added. Playing the “Same or Different” game, with alphabet letters is when a child picks two cards from a deck and says they're the same or different. The letters could be lower or upper case or one of each.

Prepare to Teach Reading to Your Child in Fort Myers FL

Since you are contemplating how to teach reading to your child, it might be wise to notice how well your child learns. Consider how well your child listens and follows directions. Reading to your child regularly and talking about the story and pictures, they will increase their vocabulary and their language skills thereby prepare them to learn to read.

Each individual child has a different learning rate and style of learning which may be by hearing, by seeing or by touching. Handling letter tiles and magnetic letters is advantageous to their learning. For a child to have the ability to see the differences and similarities in pictures and letters is very important when they learn to read. Do they detect differences in beginning consonant sounds like “sun” and “rat”? Or even hear rhyming words that end the same like “play” and “day”. Various children will understand a new lesson with a single exposure but others want 3 or more practices to commit new information to memory.

Being patient and calm when teaching reading to your child to keep the stress level down. With positive reinforcement, a child will be more confident and would be able to retain information better. Remind your child that it's okay to make a mistake when learning something new. Learning to read can be fun when adding reading games and activities. Both child and parent in Fort Myers would be happy with their success.
